KCC launches CR·SDR Forum for efficient use of frequencies

-The founding chairman of the forum is Vice-President Yu In-gyeong of LG Electronics -

On November 13, Korea Communications Commission held the inauguration ceremony of CR·SDR Forum and an invited talk at Seoul Garden Hotel to promote technologies and industries related to Cognitive Radio/Software Defined Radio (CR·SDR), which is a intelligent frequency technology.

The inaugural general assembly was attended by 100 people from research institutes, universities, and industries including Commissioner Lee Byeong-gi, the president of the Korean Institute of Electromagnetic Engineering & Science, the vice-president of Korea Information and Communications Society, and other distinguished guests.

CR·SDR Forum will be divided into three research divisions: technology development research division, standardization research division, and service policy research division. Each division will organize seminars and exhibitions and establish domestic and overseas cooperation system for analysis of technology trends, technology development and cooperation for standardization, development of service models for application of technologies and radio wave policies, and development of related policies and promotion of technologies.

In a congratulatory speech, Commissioner Lee Byeong-gi of KCC said the following: "Currently, the development of CR·SDR technologies and standardization are in their early phases. As research institutes, universities, and industries share information on technology development and standardization and achieve consensus of opinions, it will be possible to build the foundation for related technologies and industries."

Mr. Lee Pucker, the CEO of World SDR Forum and Professor Kim Jae-myeong of Inha University delivered lectures and the introduction of SDR technology into the market and CR technology and applied services.

¡Ø SDR Forum is a nonprofit organization with 100 members including the United States, Europe, Japan, and Korea. The forum promotes SDR technology and discusses international standardization of related products.

At the inaugurating assembly, Vice-President Yu In-gyeong of LG Electronics was elected as the founding chairman of CR·SDR Forum; Executive Director Jeong Yun-chae of Samsung Electronics was elected as the chairman of the organizing committee. The meeting also discussed regulations for future operation of the forum and project plans.

CR·DR technology is a technology necessary for establishing radio wave policies that can efficiently cope with changes in radio wave environment brought by the development of radio wave technologies and increased demand for frequency resources.

CR (Cognitive Radio) is a technology enables sharing of frequency by finding idle frequency that is not used by users that have permission to use the frequency. The technology analyzes radio wave environment so that different types of wireless communication services can use an identical frequency.

SDR (Software Defined Radio) is a technology that minimizes the use of hardware for wireless communication. Except for antenna and parts related to high frequency (RF), software programs are loaded in accordance with frequency, network, and the method of wireless communications.
